Maicy (She/Her)
-
Hi everyone! My name is Maicy, and I was born/raised in Atwater, California. My parents are both teachers, and they taught at the school that I attended → Atwater High School. I am currently a sophomore at Stanford University. I only have one sibling, and he also attends Stanford. I have not declared my major yet as I am very undecided about what I would like to pursue, but I have enjoyed the Introductory Seminars and language courses at Stanford. You can find me studying late at On Call Cafe, Green Library, or just spending time with friends on campus.

What drew you to working with AASPIRES?
I thought that I would attend one of the UCs after graduation, but my cousin encouraged me to speak with Vince Moua from AASPIRES. He gave me so much incredible information about college and helped guide me through the college application process. I thought that I knew about the preparation for college, but AASPIRES showed me so many new insights and advice. Applying to college can be so stressful, but I am so glad that I was able to chat with my mentor every week to answer my questions and provide support with my writing.
What was the college-readiness process like with AASPIRES?
The college-readiness process with AASPIRES prepared me for my applications and interviews. At my high school, not too many students are accepted into highly selective universities. I am so thankful that I had AASPIRES to guide me with my college applications when needed. I would not have been able to write a cohesive application that highlighted my cultural background and academic interests otherwise. AASPIRES taught me how to share my own story as well, which made my application stand out. I wish for all students to have a positive college application experience, and encourage all to apply for AASPIRES!
What would you say to students from communities like yours who are unsure about the college application process?
Please, please take your chance and apply! It was so important to have someone give me honest feedback about my college essays. Coming from an under-resourced high school and multi-ethnic background, I appreciated the help from AASPIRES. I feel that AASPIRES is truly rooting for me to succeed and represent Merced County and the Hmong and Lao communities. Vince gave me a lot of confidence to overcome the intimidation of applying to highly selective universities. Now, I am trying my best and trying to find my way, and I would love to see future students with similar backgrounds like me. If feeling discouraged, remember that you never know until you try. Do not be afraid to reach for higher education opportunities.
